Important Safety Notice: Viral "Microwave Challenge"

Posted Date: 02/04/26 (02:44 PM)

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We want to bring your attention to a dangerous social media trend currently circulating on platforms like TikTok and YouTube. This trend involves placing Nee-Doh toys (specifically the "Nice Cube" or "Groovy Glob" varieties) in a microwave. See this news story for reference.

While these are popular sensory tools used by many of our students, heating them creates a significant safety risk that has already resulted in serious injuries to children.

The Danger

The "challenge" encourages kids to microwave the toys to make them more pliable or "squishy." However, the internal gel is not designed to be heated.
  • Severe Burns: The gel inside can reach temperatures exceeding 200°F in less than 30 seconds.
  • "Stick and Burn": Because the gel is thick and adhesive, if the toy bursts (which often happens when it is touched or squeezed after heating), the boiling gel sticks to the skin. This prevents heat from dissipating, leading to deep, severe second- and third-degree burns.
  • Explosion Risk: The airtight seal on these toys causes pressure to build rapidly, turning them into a "heat bomb" that can explode when handled.

How You Can Help

  • Check the Toys: If your child owns a Nee-Doh or similar gel-filled fidget toy, please inspect it for any signs of swelling, leaking, or thinning of the outer layer.
  • Talk to Your Child: Explain that these toys are designed for squeezing only and should never be placed in a microwave, oven, or even hot water.
  • Supervise Microwave Use: If possible, ensure younger children are supervised when using the kitchen to prevent "experimenting" with household objects.
Our goal is to ensure that these helpful sensory tools remain a safe resource for our students rather than a hazard. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our school community safe.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Diana G. Gonzalez, M.Ed.
